Every so often you come across one of those figures that so precisely reminds you of why you like to like to collect figures in the first place. Amazingly enough, I’ve got two such figures right here in this post, though their release dates were quite some time apart. Alter has really hit the mark with their two Odin Sphere figures: Gwendolyn and more recently Mercedes. I have decided to group these two figures together into a single, awesome-filled post ;) Read on for more details and pretty pics.

Odin Sphere is a RPG game that was released in 2007. What set the game apart is that it was released at a time when many companies were migrating to the newly released Playstation 3. Not only that but the developers went with 2D side-scrolling graphics, a throwback to earlier console games. But don’t let the 2D graphics fool you, the game sports some of the most impressive and intricately painted textures and backgrounds you will find on any system. The game itself is heavy on story-telling and action-oriented combat. The story/gameplay is divided into chapters, each of which gives the player control of a different character, beginning with Gwendolyn and later Mercedes. Although I didn’t finish the entire game myself (gotta do that!), I do recommend checking it out if you haven’t already ^^

As for the figures themselves, Alter has really hit the mark here. They are stunningly detailed in every aspect; the sculpting, the painting, the posing, and the bases are all top notch. The wings on both figures are highly detailed. Gwendolyn has dozens of tiny feathers sculpted on her two valkyrie wings while Mercedes’ fairy wings feature a textured and translucent material that gives her a light, floating feel. Both characters include their in-game weapons, Gwendolyn with her sharp Psypher spear and Mercedes with her magical Psypher crossbow. Oh, and let’s not forget the bases. Most figure bases are a necessary annoyance as they often clash with the figure. In fact, quite the contrary is true for both of these figures; the bases actually complement the figures themselves and indeed are part of the figure. The bases not only serve the required task of holding the figure, but they also blend seamlessly in with the figure and enhance the overall product. Strange day indeed when I think a base improves a figure’s value ^^;

Would you believe these are my first Alter figures? Rather strange considering they have a reputation of creating the highest quality figures but to be honest most of their figure characters don’t interest me ^^; Well, now I can finally confirm their figure quality for myself and I have to say I am impressed ;) Hopefully Alter will release more figures to my liking as I am eager to see more figures of this caliber.

Anyway, for this post, I wanted to do less rambling in between photos and simply let the photos speak for themselves. As always, you can click the images to get to a larger version. Please enjoy the photos! :)

I’ve actually had Gwendolyn for over a year now, but had been holding off until I could do a worthy photo review for her ^^; Luckily, she was so positively received after her release last year that Alter has decided to re-release her this fall. Now all the folks that missed her the first time around (like I almost did) will be able to pick up this gorgeous figure. You definitely don’t want to miss out this time! Oh, and Mercedes who was just released in May is also getting a re-release in September so you should be able to get your hands on both of these lovely ladies ;)

Thanks for viewing!

Black Rock Shooter, for those who live under anime rocks, is a character from a Vocaloid song ingeniously titled “Black Rock Shooter“. An artist named huke drew a picture of BRS, some one thought it was awesome and made a song for it. That’s how BRS became famous.

Illustration of Black★Rock Shooter with Black Blade and Cannon by Sharufu Shuttse.

I’m not normally fan of Vocaloid (it sounds terrible to be blunt), but I fell in love with the character from the many lovely fanart images I’ve come across like the one above. I think for a lot of other fans as well she is more than just the character in a Vocaloid song. She’s spawned tons of fanart and there’s even going to be an anime based on her!

Even the box she came in was impressive. Sure, a bit wasteful to have so much cardboard for a figure of this size, but fancy ^^;

Thankfully, Good Smile Co. manages to pull off a high quality figure with the Blade version. I’ve been hearing GSC figure quality has been on a gradual decline for the past year so I was relieved to see BRS received high quality QA. Since BRS is wearing limited clothing in this version you mostly see skin. This is fine with me, of course ;) The good thing is that her skin tone is nice and even with no noticeable blemishes or impurities. Still, it’s rather flat skin tone, with pretty much nill for shading/contours. Definitely not bad quality, but could have been better.

BRS is posed with her black sword behind her, drawing back with her right arm in preparation for a powerful attack. Who’s about to die? ^^;

Mesmerizing gaze with glowing blue eyes ^^

Scars are intact. I know some people don’t like them but that’s part of her character.

By the way, if you want to see more about the BRS anime that I mentioned earlier, there is a trailer out:

More details on the upcoming anime are supposed to be released very soon!

Hmmm, I didn’t get many decent shots of her sword. Oops ^^;

The base has been significantly scaled back from the BRS Cannon version which I’m totally okay with. It helped drop the price 3,000 yen or so ;)

One thing I think GSC has done a good job with here is BRS’s hair. Not only does she sport long, flowing twintails (yes!) but they’re not just blobs of plastic. Rather, they’re nicely detailed and as a result of the more complex contours and shading on her hair the head seam is much less noticeable. And consider this figure has a swappable front hair piece, that’s saying something ^^.

For this shoot, I used some new lighting equipment. I purchased two 70W CFL bulbs (about equivalent to 130W tungsten bulbs) for my umbrellas and a new soft box with an additional 70W light. This allowed me, for the first time, to take very close macro shots without the use of a tripod. I was able to shoot all these photos handheld ^^. I have a nice tripod but it can still be difficult to get that perfect angle versus immediate feedback while looking through the viewfinder via handheld shooting. I had to bump the ISO up a bit, but my 5D2 handles that well ;) Overall, I think they turned out nicely.

Without her coat on, the tsurupettan side of BRS is revealed xD

One thing I would have liked to see improved is the painted area on her shorts and belt. The white belt paint is, at least on my figure, slightly sloppy but is only really apparent by staring closely at it.

Main difference between this version and the Cannon version (aside from the obvious change of weapons) is that BRS is not wearing her large black overcoat. We get to see her instead ;) She carries her coat in her left hand this time around.

She also comes with an alternate front hair piece which has her blue eye flame. I know this is her regular appearance but I prefer her look without it so only snapped a few with it on ^^;

Not a perfect figure (I haven’t seen one yet ^^;), but overall it’s hovering around top-notch. And given it’s relatively low price at around 5,500 yen, it’s a bargain! Certainly not a regretful purchase for me.

BRS’s nemesis, Dead Master, is getting a figure rendition by GSC. I’m wondering if I should order it or wait. BRS has gotten 3 figure renditions so I’m thinking Dead Master might follow suite. Anyone want to guess? xD

If you want to own a Black Blade version of BRS, you’re in luck. Both Hobby Search and Amiami still have her in stock for 5,505 yen and 6,100 yen, respectively. Definitely a good buy by my opinion! I hope you enjoyed the review and the pics ^^

I have purchased several Toradora figures recently and have decided to review them all in a single post. I’d like to start with Kotobukiya’s 1/8 scale Taiga Aisaka which was released in October last year. Sadly, she was a mail order exclusive and thus was a tad more difficult to obtain. Thankfully, Tokyo Hunter was able to order it for me ^^. It was the first time I had used his service and he was able to promptly ship it out when it arrived :) Was a bit more expensive than most deputy services but if you want to order an actual mail order-only item when there isn’t even a Japan-only web order form, I would recommend his service.

Palm-top Tiger Taiga is wearing an amazingly cute yellow, white, and pink swimsuit with some added frills and ribbons. Now that I think about it, how did Ryuuji convince Taiga to wear this? xD This is something that’s too cute for Taiga to just willingly put on. Well, not that I’m complaining, of course! The swimsuit you see here is not one that she wore during the anime but there are some artworks floating around with her wearing this suit.

So the swimsuit may not have been seen in the anime, but those odango look pretty familiar, don’t they? ^^ In episode 7 of the anime series, Taiga does wear her hair in this fashion for the school swim class. かわいいでしょう？

I know some other owners have mentioned build quality concerns with this figure. I don’t have any glaring issues with my copy but there are some problems. Parts of Taiga’s skin has light scuff marks. These are only visible upon close inspection and even then only from some angles. The seam on her hair is the only really obvious seam to me and it’s only apparent when looking at her from straight above. Paint quality is nothing special but isn’t notably bad either. One thing to keep in mind is that this is a very small figure. She is 1/8 scale, but she’s Taiga! You know, the palm-top tiger? To view these problems on such a small figure, you do have to look closely and doing this would reveal problems in nearly every figure. In other words, to me, she is of acceptable quality ^^.

Taiga has a cute upside-down ‘V’ for a mouth xD

View from behind. She’s cute from back here too :D

I just love her sitting pose. So cute!

Taiga also comes with a nice water-float that can be placed on her lap.

Super cute, right? Well, I thought so! That’s why I bought her even though she was an mail-order exclusive figure. She retailed for 6,300 yen but is probably difficult to acquire these days. Perhaps on YJA (haven’t checked) but I’m guessing she will be expensive ^^; Sculpt and paint quality aren’t top-notch but aren’t remarkably bad either. I will say that this is quite possibly the cutest figure I own. Really, look at her. She’s just adorable :D That alone makes up for any quality problems :3

Taiga is modeled wearing the outfit Ryuuji made for her in episode 13 for the Miss school contest. Though it appears Taiga is wearing the dress before it was ripped. Not familiar with the ripped dress? Watch the series!

I absolutely adored Toradora and was my top series for 2009. If you haven’t yet watched it, you should. It’s classified as a love comedy, but it’s got some good characters. I wrote up a review for it a while back. Check it out :)

Although her dress is not ripped, Taiga is wearing the tiara which was given to her for winning the contest. So she is wearing her unripped dress but also has the tiara she got for winning? Hehe, don’t ask me xD

Taiga hair.

A unique feature with this scaled PVC figure is that it includes 3 swappable faces. The default face is the happy face you see in the above photos. Also included is this sad, resigned facial expression. I tend to like the happy face the most but am also fond of this more melancholy expression. Given the situation that occurs in episode 15, this face is fitting.

Or maybe this angry look is more realistic? xD I think Taiga is more likely to get angry before getting sad..

Oh yeah! You can remove her dress… ^^;

Part of her outfit are these cute little angel wings. I kind would have liked them to be a tad more detailed, but they are still nice.

So how is she? She is made by Wave whose quality is hit and miss. I do like her face. The eyes and blush shading looks good. Her dress, though, has some problems. For one, it’s really clumpy and doesn’t look very real as fabric and also has some visible blemishes where it should be a solid white. Since you can change the face on this figure, there is a rather large seam on her head where her face is swapped.

So, yet again, not high quality but passable. I wish Alter or Max Factory would stop making Nanoha figures and make some Toradora ones >_< You can grab this Taiga figure by Wave for 7,500 retail but is currently out of stock at Amiami and Hobby Search.

Lastly, I have a small bonus for Toradora fans.

Ok, they’re just cheap prize toys by Taito. But for only 2,000 yen for both, I made the investment xD

Well, let’s just say that there’s a reason they were only 2,000 for the two xD Still, they’re cute!

This post is way too long so that’s all for now! Thanks for visiting.

This is the figure I’ve been watching for some time now, starting with the unpainted prototype shown at Wonder Festival. I have to say Taiga looks quite cute from these images but I’m weary of the swappable faces it features. All the figures with swappable faces that I’ve seen tend to have more noticeable seams on their heads.

Still, I like the figure. The laughing face, smiling face, and sad faces all look good though I personally prefer to keep my Taigas happy ^^. Quite likely I will be getting her. She is available for reservation at Hobby Search for 7,125 yen and will be released in December.

But wait, there’s more! Order now and you’ll receive a free Minami Chiaki Nendoroid!

OK, maybe not but Chiaki is also now available for reservation at Hobby Search. I’m really glad to see the Minami-ke Nendoroids starting ^^. Can’t wait for Kana xD

I was planning on doing a review of my newly acquired FREEing 1/4 Konata, but as it turns out, she had some major paint flaws. I may need to get a replacement as I don’t think I can repair the problems myself :( In the meantime, I went back to some photos I took in May of Gift’s 1/8 scale Saber from Fate/Stay Night. These photos have been sitting around too long anyway ^^;

Acquired during HLJ first anniversary sale for only 2,600 yen ^^. Considering she normally retails for 7,429 at HLJ, I’d say it was a steal ;)

Gift is a relatively new figure company but they seem to be doing a pretty decent job right off the bat.

I will need to look out for more figures by them ^^

Commendable sculpt quality and a highly detailed outfit. Better than some figures I’ve seen by companies such as Clayz and Wave ^^;

I actually bought this Saber figure before I had watched Fate/Stay Night. Although I hadn’t seen the anime, I was aware of the game and the general plot. Is it odd to like a character from a series you’ve never watched or played? ^^; I’ve since watched the anime and my initial fondness for Saber proved to be well-placed. She’s a great character ^^.

Saber is outfitted in skirt and full armor.

The detail on her skirt is impressive, especially on the semi-transparent white lacy part.

Photos taken outside in a garden. Probably should have blurred the background more but still a nice setting.

No pantsu shots here ^^;

All handheld shots. Thanks to the sunny conditions, there was enough light that I was able to use sufficiently fast shutter speeds with my macro lens.

Saber’s armor is skillfully modeled and is perhaps the most attractive feature of the figure.

Saber looks quite imposing grasping Excalibur.

Of course, gotta have the trademark Saber hair bun + ribbon!

While natural sunlight is great for photography, you don’t have any control over it aside from the time of day. In other words, just ignore the shadow on Saber’s face ^^;

Gift opted to provide two faces for Saber: The familiar anime-style face and a more realistic face. Totally not a fan of the “realistic” face. The eyes, the nose, even the mouth… they all just seem off >_< I will be keeping the anime face on my Saber.

Shiny mirror stand. A bit more appealing than the normal dull plastic stands that most figures come with. It tad larger than it should have been though…

A great figure by new figure company, Gift. She comes with two faces, though only one is worth using. Awesome armor, detailed lacy skirt. Considering the great deal I got on this figure, I’m quite satisfied. Even at full price, this figure would have been a good buy as it is well made overall.

Finally, new Lucky Star figures have arrived! It’s been 6 months since I first received the first half of Clayz’s 1/8 Lucky Star set, which included Kagami and Konata. Now, it’s Tsukasa and Miyuki’s turn ^^.

First up is Tsukasa, the cute, slightly air-headed twin sister of Kagami. Having recently discovered the joys of texting, she is clutching her beloved keitai ^^;

She also has her school bag in the other hand.

Used my 100mm macro lens for the photos here. Works great for figure photography. After reviewing the images, I believe I shot most of the photos with a slightly too narrow aperture as the background did not blend as much as I wanted >_<.

Tsukasa with her classic yellow ribbon. She never goes without it (or her keitai) ;)

One thing I don’t like about Tsukasa’s pose is that she is looking down slightly. Not a big deal, but required me to shoot from a low angle to get her face plus the rest of the figures in the set are looking straight forward or up.

Tsukasa’s school shoes.

Tsukasa looks looks great when viewed completely. I really do love her pose in this figure. The way she is grasping her phone and holding her bag look really cute. Plus, she is standing with her legs apart and her feet turned in which gives her a really moe appearance ^^; Her big smile and blushing cheek deal the final, uber-kawaii blow >_<

Her pose even looks good from behind. The way she is holding her bag behind her back gives her a super cute look ^^.

There is a bit of strange yellow coloration on her legs. It’s somewhat visible in this photos around her knees and socks. Not sure if that was intentional with the design…

Looking at other people’s photos of Tsukasa, it looks like the yellow areas were intentional.

These macro shots reveal flaws in the paint job, but also show that the sculptors kept their white underskirts. I like that ^^;

And for the final Tsukasa shot, you get a massive nosebleed for moe overdose XD Time to move on to Miyuki!

Here we have the pink moe shoujo Miyuki ^^.

Not a lot of detail on the hair.

The clumsy, moe meganeko is the largest and tallest of the set. Like the rest of the girls, she is dressed in her winter serafuku but comes with the bonus of dark stockings ^^

Gah, meant to crop this one but uploaded the wrong version >_<

Poor Miyuki often gets overlooked when Kagami and Konata are around. I’m sometimes guilty of it myself ^^;

眼鏡はどこですか！

The build and paint quality on these Clayz Lucky Star figures is a bit hit or miss. When I first acquired the Clayz Kagami and Konata back in February, I thought the quality was good (enough). I’ve purchased a other few high quality figures since then and looking at the Clayz Lucky Star figures more closely, I realize that the overall quality is actually a bit subpar. The white lines on their skirts, for example, are sloppy at some places. Seams on the hair and school uniform are also visible enough to be distracting. Not terrible but definitely not so good ^^;

The redeeming features of these figures is that they’re relatively inexpensive at ~5,700￥, they’re actually pretty cute, and they’re Lucky Star ;) Good enough reason for me to get them.

It would have been nice if her glasses had rims around them ^^;

Sorry, no zettai ryouiki here ^^;

And finally, the complete set all together!

Looking at all four of Clayz’s Lucky Star figures, I think that Tsukasa is the best made and most appealing of the set. And for me, the reason is the pose. It’s just really well done in my opinion :D

A good set overall, especially for the big Lucky Star fans out there (like me). I couldn’t find any online shops that had all four of the girls in stock. Toylet looked the most promising but they haven’t started shipping Tsukasa or Miyuki yet and they’re a bit more expensive. Konata seems to be the most difficult to get a hold of but I don’t think any of them are permanently sold out. Keep looking around if you’re set on getting them!

After watching the Kannagi anime and thoroughly enjoying it, I found myself looking for more of the lovely Nagi-sama. I discovered that there were already a few Nagi figures out and about. Wave, Kotobukiya, and FREEing all had their own Nagi figures available and an additional Clayz version is out later this month. Sadly, these Nagi figures all seemed to have something slightly off with them but I thought the FREEing version was the most appealing and I decided to place an order for her.

A few weeks later, I returned home to find Nagi waiting for me. A pleasant surprise indeed :)

She is dressed in her regular attire that came with her when she appeared before Jin for the first time. I wish I had my own personal earth goddess. I wouldn’t even mind if she threw tantrums in the closet ^^;

Her hair looks pretty good. Not overly simplistic and stays fairly accurate to the source. Her white ribbon is also in place ^^

Although many fans have been disappointed with the Nagi-sama figures that are available thus far, I think this version by FREEing is one of the better ones. Her pose feels energetic and her outfit is well done. I think the face is the main problem people have with this figure. Unfortunately, it’s not perfect. From some angles, she looks very good but from others she seems a bit awkward. I think the above photo shows how she can look good given the right viewpoint.

Nagi-same comes with her mahou shoujo wand to ward off any impurities for me. Quite helpful ^^ The wand is nicely detailed with glittery reflective material.

Nicely sculpted legs and boots :3

The seams on her head and hair are most noticeable. Seems to be a common problem with a lot of figures. Otherwise, not too bad. There is also a scratch on the hair along the front. I believe this is specific to my version and she came like that. Somewhat distracting :(

And, yes, this Nagi comes with a cast-off mode ^^;

Her skirt is removable. Gives easy access to pantsu >_< I personally prefer my Nagis fully clothed, with their skirts on, but to each their own.

Seems Nagi is the pink pantsu type ^^;

Why Nagi is running around in the forest without her skirt on puzzles me too…

And back on goes her skirt ^^;

Nagi’s trademark outfit.

Remind anyone else of Sakura’s wand? ;)

This was actually the first figure shoot I did with my Canon 100mm Macro (outdoors). I’ve just been putting off this post for too long >_< The 100mm macro is simply amazing for outdoors figure photography. Allows me to get very sharp close-range shots like the one above.

Has anyone read the Kannagi manga? Is it good? Better or worse than the anime?

Although she’s not the best figure in my collection, I like this Nagi figure. It’s a shame she doesn’t look good from all angles, but is still appealing overall. I am satisfied with the purchase though if she cost more than the 6,476 yen I paid, I might not have considered her. She is still in stock at a few online shops (such as HLJ). I would love to see more companies take an attempt at a Nagi PVC figure, maybe by GSC? That would be awesome ^^

I present here the wise wolf deity, Horo, from the Spice & Wolf series.

I like her face in this figure. It’s definitely styled more in line with the animated series than the light novel illustrations so if you like the anime version, you will probably like her face here. Kotobukiya’s Horo figure is styled after the light novel illustrations and is getting a re-release this summer if you prefer that look ^^

Horo is displayed in the clothes Lawrence purchased for her. We can’t have her running around naked forever, right? ^^; This includes the little rope “tail” which is removable.

Why she even bothers to wear the fake tail when her real tail is sticking out so obviously is beyond me ;)

The build quality of this figure is pretty good, better than I expected (Good Smile quality, I suppose). Her outfit is nicely detailed with the folds in the cloth and the removable grain pouch around her neck. Her hair is also nicely detailed with it flowing down her back.

Good Smile provided some customizability for Horo. On hot days, Horo can take off her vest and heavy skirt for a bit more freedom and comfort. There is also a cute hat she can wear (after removing her ear pieces) and an alternate tail.

I love her beret. Always liked beret hats ^^;

The Japanese name of the series is 狼と香辛料 (Ookami to Koushinryou, Wolf and Spice) but everyone calls it Spice and Wolf in English. In fact, it’s even printed as Spice and Wolf on the base of this figure.

While Spice and Wolf wasn’t the most exciting series I’ve seen (more on the other side of the spectrum), it was interesting in its own ways. The discussion on actual economics was kind of interesting. I just wasn’t satisfied with the pace of the series overall. Horo was an appealing character though. Maybe I just have a thing for characters who are ancient godesses that transform into cute girls?

I do like this figure a lot and am glad I picked it up. The optional accessories are a nice bonus so you can display her whichever way you like most. Good Smile Company has done a good job crafting this lovely goddess of harvest and makes a great addition to any collection. Unfortunately, she’s currently sold out at all the online stores I checked.

Also, for Spice & Wolf fans out there, Spice & Wolf II will be airing this summer. More profit scheming with Horo and Lawrence, I’m sure ^^ Be sure to check it out!

Yay, they’re finally here. These are the first real figures I’ve purchased since last August when I received my last set of Lucky Star characters figures. Here we have Hiiragi Kagami (Kagamin) and Izumi Konata as made by Clayz. From preview images of these figures, they looked a tad plain but upon arrival and further insepection, I have to say I like them. They’re fairly simple but they capture the characters pretty well ^^

Also noteworthy, when these two lovely figures first arrived last week, my initial photo shoot did not produce very good results. I don’t have much experience photographing figures and I just couldn’t get the lighting right. It’s rather cold in Indiana in February and it was a overcast day so I was shooting indoors. I gave up on those initial photos and resolved to try again later. I received some good advice from Smithy who directed me to the HappySoda blog where super rats had written an excellent tutorial for figure lighting. I made a trip to the general store and returned with all the materials needed for a mini figure studio. Though not quite perfect, the results were much better this time around ^_^

Starting off with my favorite, Kagamin. She is dressed in her winter serafuku and is in the process of brushing back her famous twin tails.

She has a small mouth in this pose. I guess she’s not yelling at Konata right now ^^;

Hmmm, I wonder why Kagami chose that dark brown color her hair ribbons. Ah well, she makes them look cute anyway.

Both of these figures were released in late January but due to me being cheap and using SAL, I received them a full 2.5 weeks later orz.

Nice legs ^^

I like the detail on her socks with the slight wrinkles on the top.

Full body view. She’s quite tall. The proportions are a bit more realistic than in the anime.

Other side…

And that’s it for Kagami :) Up next is Konata.

Konata! While Kagami will always be my favorite, Konata is still quite cute. Ignore the background being cut off in the corner… it’s my first real figure shoot -_-

Konata’s long hair.

I like Konata’s pose. Very cute ^^

For some reason, Konata comes with two accessories. A choco cornet on a stick (^^;) and that round cat thing.

Full body shot. Not quite as tall as Kagami but still a good height.

I wonder what’s she gesturing at… or is she spontaneously breaking into dance? Lecturing Kagami maybe? ^^

Special bonus! So close, but I won’t let you see it =P

Sorry, can’t let you see Konata either ^^; These shots were a bit more difficult to take with camera positioning >_<

The two together at last. The difference in height is apparent here.
That’s it, folks! Hope you enjoyed the photos :)
